I love Beach Rd for photo opportunities. I saw a large man with a tramp stamp that I had to very carefully photograph to avoid getting killed.
Looking at what she is carrying I say she is selling som tom. Tasty if you enjoy eating fire. It explains the hose next to toilets in Thai bathrooms.

SWMBO has a Thai food rating scale that she applies to my spice intake capability. Anything from these ladies falls into the “this will blow your head off” category and is thus avoided.

I have eaten it. I had tears leaking down my face but I finished it. Then I promptly got a coconut smoothie to put out the fire that I was sure raging in my mouth. There is another version that is sweeter and uses more fish sauce. I asked what the difference was but I got the mystical “from Issan” answer. In December I watched some unsuspecting gentleman get a spoonful shoved into his mouth after he said he wanted to try it. As he started to cough and gasp for breath I could not help but laugh at him. He then foolishly tried to cool his mouth with Singha which made me laugh harder.

I do believe Spike had it right in the original comment “concocting a snack to order”. You can order Som Tam as hot or as bland as you like – it is made there and then. Personally I like 2 chillis in mine, it’s just enough to pep it up and not too hot to remove the skin from inside your mouth. The Isaan version has crab and stinky fish in it – I don’t do that. Ask for Thai style and it comes with lots of peanuts and tiny dried shrimps. Aroy!!
