Adobe can fuck off

I was a user of Lightroom before it was Lightroom. The software was called Pixmantec, and when Adobe acquired it to form a basis for Lightroom, I received version 1 of Lightroom for free. But in the ten plus years since then I have paid, for every new version and then for a subscription once Adobe moved the product to a rental basis. Last month they changed the product again and my version of Lightroom became Lightroom Classic; and we know what eventually happens to products that have “Classic” in the name. This new version included a feature that fucks up my photo catalogue every couple of days; so thanks for that Adobe.

The catalogue destruction, the subscription model, and the reality that I am shooting less than I used to; has encouraged me to to look for alternatives, and also to check how I might cancel my Adobe subscription. Adobe “help” advised there is a button on my account screen which I could press to cancel, except my account screen had no such button. So it was on to the on-line chat to find out what I would have to do to cancel. The chat provided me with a transcript:

Tahira: Your next billing date is 28 NOV 2017 AND next renewal is 28 march 2018.
Spike: How do I cancel?
Tahira: As your subscription is under Annual Commitment / Monthly Billing, Since you agreed to be in a commitment, if you cancel the subscription within the commitment period, there is an Early Termination Fee which amounts to 50% of the remaining months. This fee is as per the contract you agreed to at the time of purchase and was mentioned in the terms and conditions as well.

Tahira: If you cancel your subscription right away than you have to cancellation fee , what best I can suggest you is complete your tenure and came back for the cancellation before 28 march 2018 and after 28 feb 2018. to avoid next renewal

  1. About 2 weeks ago I spotted an article that mentioned that the current version of Lightroom [6] is the last of the pre “cloud” versions of the product. Just as they did with Photoshop, Adobe are migrating to a subscription-only service.

    I’ve ordered myself a copy of LR6 and will stick with that and Photoshop CS5.5…

    No intent to “upgrade” to a locked-in solution… Adobe can go take a running jump…
